Standing in front of a portrait, I wonder if a painter were to ever colour 'hope', the one that has been thrashed and beaten down more than once, when each time it starts to breathe, to realise that it could be- come more than just a flicker- something bigger and brighter- what colour would it be? The kind that's never allowed to flourish, the one that's always nipped in the bud but still refuses to fade?
