Great book for 4-7 crowd

To begin, this book is NOT meant for 3 year olds. It states clearly from the publisher that this is for the 4-8 crowd, though I think by 8 the kids know what they are getting into at the dentist and don't really find this that entertaining. But I digress. This book is a wonderful book if read in the right context. Yes, the little girl ends up being scared of the electric toothbrush and bites the dentist's finger. But the dentist is not mad. In fact, he realizes that HE made the mistake by not telling Vera what to expect. And that's what kids want: to know what is about to happen to them. So I think this book is a good jumping-off point to open the discussion of going to the dentist and what it will be like. For many it's NOT just about counting teeth - it's actually cleaning and it's sometimes loud. When my kids were 3 I was not reading this to them, 4 is really the earliest. And even then, I had to keep my reading "tone" upbeat and fun. Vera books are generally wonderful, the illustrations are wonderfully quirky, though often words need to be changed or omitted (as with many children's books).

My kids love this book

It has great lessons about going to the dentist and overcoming your fears. This book has meant so much to my kids who had somehow worked themselves into a frenzy about the dentist! It has vivid drawings and a very real story that isn't patronizing at all. We're working on collecting all the Vera books (they also really like Vera Goes to School).

Humanizing the Dentist!

My 2 1/2-year-old and I love reading this book together. Instead of being scary, the scene in which Vera flees the dentist has become one of our favorite games: My daughter loves to run through the house "being Vera," and I chase after her as Dr. Knoll, saying "Come back, little girl! I want to clean your teeth!" My daughter loves the illustrations and now asks to go to the dentist all the time. It's a good read and has lots of details that kids would find fascinating.
