The enticing rebelliousness of hero and heroine...bring substance to the plot. Slirling's knowledge of the era enhances the romantic novel. Beautiful, spirited Argent Wood, lured by the bustle and promise of London, arrives there penniless and is rescued by dashing Rawson Carlyon, a "Gentleman" with a dangerous double life. When a surprise settlement comes from the War dept from her deceased father, she invests it and makes a windfall. She then parlays it into a partnership in a cotton mill and her dreams become a reality except for one: the rakish Carlyon. Although his passion for her runs deeper than she knows, still he is duty bound never to reveal his true nature, nor his mission. Against the fiery backdrop of nineteenth century England and Napoleonic France is spun an unforgettable tale of one woman's search for independence in a man's world...and of a love yearing to survive amidst the treacherous and unyielding tides of war. I was so pleasantly surprised with this book. Loved the hero and heroine. I think the author could have added a few more pages, or another chapter to add some more depth to Argent & Rawson's love.
