Veerashaivas existed prior to the 12th century, but their philosophy and practices were based on Shivagamas (9th century), Siddhanta Shikhamai (10th century), and/or Shrikarabhashya (11th century). The present day Lingayatas are the followers of the philosophy and practices put forward by the Sharaas of the twelfth century. The terms 'Veerashaiva' and 'Lingayata' have been used interchangeably. The religious philosophy is Theistic Monism, a belief that all is God and the Self is God.
