"Vaz" is the story of Vaz Gettnor, a socially inept but scientifically brilliant man who falls somewhere on the Asperger's/Autism spectrum. He verges on the nature of an "idiot savant," having a great deal of difficulty relating to people, but absolute brilliance in the sciences, especially physics and chemistry. Vaz has a benevolent boss who lets him track down interesting findings instead of forcing him to stay focused on the drudgery research projects the company assigns him. Vaz doesn't recognize that the company's been paying him a pittance while cashing in on a number of inventions he's made while working on those little side projects. Then, the company promotes a new manager who fires Vaz for his odd behavior before he understands how important Gettnor is to the company's bottom line. Once fired, Vaz joyfully finds himself able to work on whatever research he wants to work on, instead of the boring projects his managers assign to him. He's got a lead on a Low Energy Nuclear Reaction (cold fusion) that fascinates him.Meanwhile, the man who fired him, in a great deal of trouble for killing the goose that laid the golden eggs, decides he can force Vaz to hire back on, or at least give up the tech for his LENR invention. He hires some people to strong-arm those secrets out of Vaz. Those people make the mistake of assuming that the man's social ineptness means he won't be able to protect himself or his family. That assumption's a serious mistake. After all, to a genius, almost anything can be a weapon!
