Moonbeams hug toughened bark of honey locust trees. Smoke drifts and sags. Thousands of soldiers lay on the field, no distinction to their ranks, deaf to the battle cries, the bombs, the screams. Blood-soaked grass scents the air. Rifles rest by their sides. The Napoleon, now unmanned, aims at empty space. —Diane Smith
