Sparks fly when Brooke Green, a rising star in the big city culinary scene, is called back to her tiny hometown of Valentine to care for her injured mother. On her journey, she encounters a helpless tuxedo kitten lost in a snowdrift and brings him to Valentine's only veterinarian, Dr. Tom O'Connell, a former classmate of Brooke's. It's been a lifetime since they saw each other, and he's not the girl she remembers; now he's a rugged, handsome, and infuriating man who accuses her of stealing when she insists on keeping the pitiful kitten she's already named Lucky.

As a hometown boy, Tom's world is simpler than Brooke's, centered on the county's animals, his parents, and his mom's landmark restaurant, the Lady Anne.
