" Emmanuel] Burgin's characters are brutal and endearing. He is a relentless and impassioned storyteller."-- Void Magazine An insider's peek at minor league football in the early 80s, where leagues are filled with drug users, Vietnam vets, and NFL misfits. Over one season, Robbie is forced to make decisions that compromise his ideals, football career, and future. A San Diego Book Award finalist.
Enjoyed the tail of a collegiate gladiator finding his way into adulthood. I could feel the pain his body was in during his season with the Cougars minor-league football program. I was there and played with Burgen. He brought back vivid memories of putting it all on the line dreaming of the glory and payoff if we could get into the NFL or USFL. I was sorry that the book ended. I was sorry that the games end. Sorry that one day every young man must choose and the dream must end. Reading Burgen's novel has motivated me to attend the planned reunion of those 1980, 1981 and 1982 national championship teams.

This is a fun book to read with lots of football and party action. I'm learning about the American game of football and this book shows the mind it takes to play this game, and it shows how much they give up to reach for their NFL dream. For some it is too much for others whatever it takes. Read this book. I think it will surprise you like it did me.
Loved it

I'm not a big sports fan, but I loved this book, it's more than a sports story. It's raw, fast, and furious. It captures your attention from start to finish. A book about extremes. Yes, the eighties really were like that.
Gritty Tale of Pro Football Life

A fast read. I couldn't put it down. Sex, drugs, rock'n roll and the best football scenes I've ever read. You feel like you're right on the field. But there's more than football in this story. The sacrifice for ones dreams: Is it all worth it? I highly recommend this book. I look forward to Mr. Burgin's next project.
Vagabond Blues is a must read!!!

Whether of not you have ever played football you will love this story. Some of the circumstances will make your side hurt from laughter and other times you will also see a dark side of minor league football that you never knew existed. The alcohol, drugs, women, and hangovers give it the hard core rock and roll feel. Two thumbs way up!!! My girlfriend even loved it and she doesn't play sports.
