USS Kepler Dawn is the first earth ship to travel to another star system and its planet designated as 'Kepler 186f.' The ship is enormous, spanning ten miles in length, two miles in width and the same in height. It is capable of carrying five thousand colonists and crew on a voyage expected to take 100 years even while traveling at four and one half times the speed of light. Ensign Andy Kelso, a recent graduate of the ship's space academy and his girlfriend, Miki Sakura, are scientific geniuses. They find favor with the Captain, Johan Hollenbeck and are rapidly promoted as they help him solve a series of violent crimes by members of the crew. In the process, they discover something much more dangerous to the success of the mission.
