I like the way the author explains how java applets and applications work. This book should especially help beginners, but more experienced programmers might learn something from this book too.

Initially I didn't have much faith in any of the "Using ...." books, since they are mostly very shallow, and done in a hurry without good organization and materials that are really useful to the programmer. This Java book is a wonderful surprize ! It explains everything in a very clear way, and points out many tricky and important issues that most other books seem to ignore by default. What's even more amazing is that : this is a beginner's book, yet it covers topics that are important to any serious professional programmer, eg., object oriented analysis and design, UML, even sections about distributed programming using CORBA ! Although the official JDK 1.2 release is not out yet, this book got most key issues of the new release covered. One can easily tell that the author really did put some thoughts in integrating the subject in this book so that it guides the readers step-by-step to proficiency in Java programming. I highly recommend this book to go with Horstmann's "Core Java" series of books and Eckel's "Thinking in JAVA".
