Children are coming into contact with digital media at an increasingly early age and have to deal with it. This book examines the awareness and critical thinking skills of 8- to 10-year-olds in relation to new media and their personal use of it, with the aim of developing educational approaches. It does this by placing the topic within existing theories, such as child development, media and socialisation research, and media appropriation. There is a particular focus on media literacy, media criticism, developmental limitations and opportunities for support. The theory is supplemented by the evaluation of interviews with children, from which goals for the promotion of media literacy in after-school care are developed. To achieve these goals, a number of low-threshold media education programmes are developed, particularly for practical work with primary school children. These ideas can be implemented in everyday after-school care without requiring significant resources.
