Between 1984 and 1997, rescue excavations uncovered the southern part of the settlement, which originally covered around one hectare, with a strong fortification and numerous building features. This volume presents the newly revised stratigraphy and the architectural features, supplemented by a discussion of the sectional profiles and numerous illustrations. Tell Sheikh Hassan is one of the settlement mounds on the Syrian Euphrates whose finds and features make a significant contribution to the so-called Uruk period (ca. 3900 - 3100 BC). This is due in particular to the fact that this settlement dates to the Middle Uruk period and thus predates Habuba Kabira-South and Jebel Aruda on the opposite bank of the river, which is made clear above all by the finds presented in a subsequent volume. With the latest publications on the excavation results from Habuba Kabira South and Jebel Aruda, this volume now represents a further important contribution to research into an exciting and still controversially discussed cultural epoch.
