The Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina is founded on an eventful history, primarily on the dynamics of constant migration and various systems of rule. As the capital, Sarajevo has always been at the centre of these development processes, so that the influences of the past within the country are still reflected today in genetically grown structures and current developments, especially there. This work describes the historical rise of this multi-ethnic city and its accompanying epochal heritage, especially in terms of its architecture. The events of past phases of development discussed, especially the last civil war in the Balkans, are included in the analysis of recent circumstances alongside a physiognomic description of the city. In the course of this, particular attention is paid to the composition of the population, the functional remit and the current status of Sarajevo as the capital.
