Urban Design for Planners

A review of the urban design literature reveals the differences in understanding and diversity of definitions that experts have provided in this field and profession. It seems that a significant part of the controversy and disagreement in the application of the concept of urban design is due to the lack of sufficient attention to the dynamic, living and evolving nature of this cognitive field. Despite this, more than 5 decades have passed since the formal formation of the scientific-artistic field of urban design, there is still no single definition of this field that is agreed upon by experts. Urban design, whose initial formation is attributed by some to the "failure of modern architecture" and by some to the "failure of this field in creating human environments," actually came into existence to fill the gap and void between the two disciplines of architecture and urban planning. What is important in this regard is that the attention of urban design in creating urban environments is more focused on the qualitative and aesthetic components of the environment, while the attention of urban planning is mainly focused on the categories of spatial organization.
