Book Overview

Urashima Taro is a Japanese legend about a fisherman who rescues a turtle and is rewarded for this with a visit to Ryugu-jo, the palace of Ryujin, the Dragon God, under the sea. He stays there for three days and, upon his return to his village, finds himself 300 years in the future.

I hope they have another run.

I grew up with this series on my bookshelf. Sometimes it's obvious that art is more for the asthetic of adults and lost on children. This is not one of those books. Even though the art work still appeals to me as an adult, as a child it was inspiring. I visited the fishing village, and felt the water against my skin as Urashima and I rode the turtle's back. I've read other English translations and have not liked them as much. This translation seems set on respectfuly telling a tale of another culture. Other translations have simple art and simple wording. I find much of what is offered to children is too simple. This is for those looking for a book that sparks imagination and has rich layers that allow one to discover something new each time it is revisited.
