We follow the river to the lap of Annapurna, work with the weather, rush to beat the rain. We are trekking in the monsoon-in the middle of last night I woke up with the room shaking. A confirmed earthquake. So the mountains throw surprises. We gun it through avalanche zones like yellow lights. The innkeeper says, "Way up there is a massive amount of snow." We climb over mossy rubble in the woods, where a truck-sized boulder teeters on the edge of a cliff. We walk beneath its belly. We cross slimy river rocks and think big rapids down there. The Belgian man thinks we hike too fast. He says, "You guys are going like pirates " Maybe we are. Like a Pittsburgh pitcher on the twelfth of June in 1970.
