The word upanishad means that which one knows by being close to the master, that which one hears sitting close to the master, that which enters one's experience in his presence, that which resonates in his nearness, that which is touched in his proximity. Upanishad means to sit close, to be close, to have closeness. So the disciples' job is only to listen, and the teacher must remain only the speech. The listener is not there, the speaker is not there; here remains only the speech, there remains only the ability to listen, then upanishad happens.
