Trying out new author

I thought I would try out a "new to me" author. I have read and own many books of diverse authors. I tried to read this book and author with an open mind and judge the writing style and ability on its own merits, not comparing it with more gifted authors, but after forcing myself to finish the first chapter I got up and threw the book in the garbage.
