In 1939, Arthur Bell and Jack Mercer leave their families in Hull and volunteer for the British Army. They believe that whatever the war brings, they will face it together.
But during the desperate evacuation of Dunkirk, the two friends are torn apart. Arthur escapes to England carrying Jack's identity disc and a burden of guilt he cannot put down. Jack is captured and transported to a prisoner-of-war camp, where hunger, forced labour and years behind barbed wire slowly erode his hope of ever returning home.
As the war carries Arthur from North Africa and Normandy to the final British advance across the Rhine, Jack is driven westwards on a brutal winter march. Their families wait, grieve and change, while letters cross Europe too late, remain unanswered or are never sent at all.
In the ruins of Germany, with the fighting finally over, one name on a hospital list offers Arthur a last chance to find the friend he believed he had lost forever.
Until Morning Found Us Again is a moving historical novel about friendship, family, guilt and survival. Set against the final years of the Second World War, it tells the story of two English soldiers separated by war-and of the long, painful journey that leads them back to one another.
