With the summer circuit over, Roadside Paradise takes refuge in Tarquin, V's protected compound in the middle of the New Mexico desert. Tarquin provides safety and respite for the troupe, but Athena has very little time to rest. V's older brothers make it clear they are nervous about her contract with V, and do not trust that she is strong enough to challenge the Guild of the Red Dragon.

Even though Athena is desperate to prove her strength and go after those who abducted her sister, she finds herself returning to DeRidder, Louisiana-her hometown where her family met so many grisly fates. With V at her side, she tries to weather the suspicious looks of those who once knew her, but V is far more focused on how many coincidences seemed to push Athena directly into his path starting from her childhood.

Determining coincidences from intentional actions becomes more difficult the deeper Athena and V dig into the secrets of the Alexander household. And while they investigate Athena's home, an unseen danger stalks them on the outskirts of town, and V's home may not be as protected as believed.
