Until Michael Phelps bested his record in Beijing, China, Ray Ewry held the all-time Olympic record of winning 10 individual gold medals in all three standing jumping events.As a young boy struggling with Polio in the late 1870's, Ray conquered the crippling and life-threatening paralysis and entered Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. While a student and later as an associate professor there, he broke world record in the standing broad jump and went on to represent the New York Athletic Club and United States Olympic Team in four consecutive Olympics from 1900 through 1908.
