Kevin Fulton is the only double agent to have infiltrated the upper echelons of the Provisional IRA. No known spy has spent longer within the organization or risen higher in its ranks. In order to maintain his cover within one of the world's most feared terrorist groups, Fulton was forced to take part in some of its crimes. So highly was he thought of by the IRA leaders that they made him a member of their feared internal police--ironically, his job became to root out and kill informers. In 1994, Fulton was forced to flee Northern Ireland after one of his operations compromised his safety. He was abandoned by the security forces for whom he was working and now lives like a fugitive. But now he has fought back by doing what his military chiefs thought he would never be brave enough to do: go public with his story.
Kevin Fulton is the pseudonym of an Irish Catholic man who was born in northern Ireland and who after serving briefly in the British army was recruited by it's military intelligence to return to the place of his birth to penetrate the IRA. He did so and operated undercover inside the IRA for a staggering 15 years. He was even able to penetrate the IRA's ultra secret 'England Department,' named so because it is the unit charged with bombing the British mainland. He was also promoted into the IRA's counterintelligence unit or 'knutting squad,' named so because after they brutally interrogate suspected informant they put bullets into their knuts or heads. Ultimately after too many of the operations he was involved with failed Kevin was slated for interrogation and execution by the squad. His handlers at military intelligence had forewarning of this but purposely failed to tell him in order to protect an even more important informant. Kevin avoided execution by going into hiding. He is currently suing his former handlers for the 400,000. pounds worth of resettlement money they promised him in case of such an eventuality.

I've not left a reveiw before but after reading this book i felt i had to. This is without a doubt one of the best books i have ever read! i genuinely couldn't put it down. if anyone has a remote interest in reading about people working undercover, or the events of Northern Ireland during this period it is an absolute must read. i couldn't recommend it enough! in fact even if you don't have an interest in undercover workers or Northern Ireland read it anyway, you won't be disappointed!!

This is an excellent work about Kevin Fulton (not his true name) and how he was recruited by British intelligence to serve as an informant against the Provisional IRA. This book is very well written and a scorching fast read - I finished it in a single afternoon and was left wanting more. I was so engrossed in Kevin's life that I could have read hours more of his hair-raising stories and stomach-wrenching drama. Kevin was a British informant or "tout" for 15 years and worked his way through the ranks of the IRA all while providing timely information to various British security organizations like MI5. While he provided valuable intelligence to Britain for a long time, the reader can see how Kevin is worn down from the incredible stress of his double life and the constant fear that the IRA would uncover him and then execute him. Ultimately, Kevin was discovered by the IRA and was slated for execution by their "Nutting Squad" after one too many IRA missions that Kevin participated in was compromised. However, instead of protecting Kevin and pulling him and his family out, the Brits left Kevin high and dry in order to protect an even better placed informant. Today, Kevin is locked in a contentious legal battle, suing the British state for breaking their promise to protect him, resettle him, and pay him for his risks. Kevin found out too late that he was just another expendable pawn in Britain's Dirty War against the IRA. A must read.
You Knew It Went On

The whispers you have heard for years are finally coming out, according to 'Kevin Fulton'. This guy went deep undercover & for what, Saving lives? No, massaging ego's if what you read is true. The book takes you along at a very good speed & is in essence, a very good book, a bit short, if I was to be cynical. There are not a lot of real surprises in this book, just confirmation that trust was weak on the ground & in some cases, confirmation that there were more than one enemy in this god forsaken war.
good read
