The development of Bonita Bay, an upscale retirement community in southwest Florida, followed a plan different from other communities. Wetlands, wildlife habitats, and their supporting water flows made "off limits" before permitting and construction began. The story of this process was gathered from newspaper archives and dozens of interviews with the people who worked in and around the community, and describes how Bonita Bay become a unique community, shared by wildlife, natural vegetation, and thousands of human residents. All profits from the book will be held in a 501 (c) 3 non-profit corporation, Preserve Bonita Bay Inc. The profits will be used to provide seed funding for a memorial to David Shakarian, the founder of Bonita Bay, or for other recreational and conservation needs in the community. By purchasing this book, residents, stakeholders, and fans of nature preservation can register their support for the vision and ideals of David Shakarian, and perhaps can help to memorialize the man who envisioned and planned Bonita Bay.Today Bonita Bay is really a nature preserve that also has thousands of homes, golf courses, miles of trails, and a marina. This is the story of how this all came to be!
