Unrequited: A Gay Memoir is a coming-of-age story set in 1980s New England, about growing up on the working-class edge of an upper-class town. It's about growing up inside your head, noticing everything, feeling intensely, and discovering that neither quality makes adolescence any easier.

The narrator is an earnest boy whose inner life runs several drafts ahead of his outward one. He thinks harder instead of acting faster, which turns out to be exactly the wrong approach when everyone else is being loud, performing confidence, and pretending not to care.

This is less about coming out or finding a community. It's narrower and more inconvenient. The book follows a homoromantic sensibility that shows up as fascination rather than hunger: intense, specific attachments to other boys that are emotional long before they're sexual. One person at a time. Immune to whoever else is available. No interest in sexual shortcuts or playing games in some one else's code.

What you get is a darkly funny portrait of near-misses: staying loyal to ambiguity, feeling in excess of the facts, trying to explain a complicated inner world to people who prefer things simple.

Unrequited treats longing as material-sometimes painful, often absurd, occasionally dignified. It's about misplaced devotion, emotional precision, and wanting something specific in a world optimized for different desires.
