Everybody knows exactly what they are going to do with their life before they're even old enough to speak, thanks to the curious magical tattoos that they are born with, in varying shapes that depict the trajectory their life will follow. These tattoos are the most important part of what makes people who they are, and those without them, Blanks, have no true place in life. Nobody wishes they were Blank. Yet, Liera finds herself hiding her Mark and pretending to be Blank. Terrified of what her true Mark could mean, she has avoided confronting the reality of the odd, Black Mark in the shape of a bleeding heart that she had had all her life. She doesn't know how to use Magic, as all the other Marked do, and the shape gives her no clue about her purpose, so she may as well be Blank, anyway. But when a group of people seek her out, seeming to have answers about her Mark despite being reluctant to offer them, she will be forced to confront, not just her own Mark, but to challenge the very structure upon which Marks exist.
