Unlucky Like the Land brings together poems first composed in the years 1993-1999 when Horton was traveling extensively in Asia and spent three years living in Tokyo as a college English teacher. Upon returning to Los Angeles, he attended Beyond Baroque's Wednesday Night Poetry Group where many of the poems were further worked on, i.e., ruthlessly critiqued and ripped apart. Quite a few were simply thrown away. But the ones that survived the knives of the group ultimately made it to this volume.
