I had intended to buy this book for over a year and I'm so glad I finally did. I heard about it from Steve's sister Jane when we both attended our 45 year High School Reunion in Durand, Wi. Although I'm not Catholic and there were any number of things in the book I may not understand, the story itself is completely absorbing. Growing up in Durand, as Steve did, many of my friends were Catholic, so terms used in the book were familiar to me, if not necessarily completely understood. I remember well what a nice family the Boehrers were and it doesn't surprise me at all for Steve to have stood up for his principles as he obviously did.

Questioning is a marvelous way to arrive at truth.

This novel punctures balloons of institutional pomposity and power. A thesis demands an antithesis, and the result brings a synthesis. If people can speak openly (and be heard), truth and goodness can prevail. The authoriarian Bishop, facing different realities, learns humility and discovers more truth. This is a fascinating story. Read it. You wont put the book down easily.

Honest, sensitive portrayal of injustice in the church

Boehrer addresses realistically and sensitively the major issues and concerns faced in the Catholic Church today. He describes the abuse of power and authority by a hierarchy determined to preserve the institution at the expense of the gospel message of servant leadership. This novel speaks truth in an understandable manner that forces readers to stop and reflect on institutional justice issues. It also provides hope that even bishops can experience an awakening and change of heart.
