Exciting thriller

This novel sees Jo Bannister away from her best known fictional territory namely the Castlemere police procedurals set in the UK .This time around she sets the book mostly in Mexico and Texas. It is a tale of smuggling -people ,art treasures and drugs -from Mexico into the States. The heroine is an Englishwoman,Angharad (Annie)Rees who is shocked to learn that she had a brother ,the progeny of her late father and a Mexican woman and that this previously unheard of relative is dead.He was killed along with several other Mexicans being smuggled illegally into the States ,shot and left to rot in the desert. Driven by a need to find out more about her late brother's life and death she goes to Texas .there she discovers that far from the wastrel and vagrant that her brother was painted as he was in reality a Federal agent who had been responsible for bringing many people smugglers to justice and has been killed by them .Aided by Joshua Cade ,a Border Patrol agent and by Chico ,a Federal agent ,she goes after the man responsible ,a multi-millionaire art collector named Mason by setting up a scam. Also implicated is a British archaelogist named Balfour ,a former classmate of Annie , a man with a serious grievance aginst the Mexican authorities. This is a thriller not a detective story unlike most Bannister books .It is fast paced and exciting and displays a good feel for the landscape of Mexico .Annie is a feisty heroine ,imaginative and courageous .The writing is a bit slack at times -I am not sure an American agent would use english colloquilisms such as "Its not much cop" meaning ,"not very good" but overall its a good edge of the chair thriller with good physical action and a brisk pace
