What would you do if you thought the universe was going to end?The Deep Exploration of Uncharted Space Program or DEUS was an initiative of the department of astrophysics of the Ministry of Science under the auspices of the Governing Council. It comprised a compliment of twelve probes launched close to the edge of the known universe. Publicly, its mission parameters were the benign collection of data. However, the impetus for DEUS had been prompted by the observation of an unexplained, and luckily, unpublicized distant spatial distortion and a chance encounter with an obscure scientific paper. The Council became increasingly alarmed when, one by one, the probes went offline at the approach of the mission's centenary. What does it all mean?Only the project director of DEUS has the knowledge to explain what has happened. However, an accident shortly after the launch of the probes has left him consigned to stasis with mental trauma. The key to unlock his mind rests with an individual without the disposition and experience to rise to the occasion. Can someone ordinary do something extraordinary?
