Filled With Despair and Human Angst

Like Oates' other works, this one is filled with the despair of human angst - - of the separate and irreparable alienation with which we must contend in our eternal search for love and connectedness. Centered in academia, the story deals with the affairs, fantasies and relation- ships among university faculty as they fantasize about their relationship with a guest poet-in-residence. The novel is well-written and mesmerizing.
