nicely crafted, not contrived

Susan Schneider traveled far and wide collecting "vignettes" from couples in all 48 contiguous United States and several other countries. You can open at random to any page and discover an enjoyable first-person narrative of how strangers met and eventually became spouses. A couple of the accounts I read when I first checked out the book were stories that ended in divorce making me think, "Oh, no! I do not like this at all!" but though I didn't keep count, divorce was a rare final outcome. I especially like the clean, open-looking layout and the fact the author did not try to make each story exactly the same length with precisely the same opening, middle and closing format. One of the best stories the author presented as (sort of) a single account is actually a trilogy of how three brothers from one large family married three sisters from another large family. Whether you've been single for a long time and aren't seriously looking for someone or you're happily newlywed or approaching a major milestone anniversary, I predict you'll enjoy this book as much as I did. What is more, it would make a great gift for almost anyone on your list, from high school kids just starting to date to centenarian great-great-grandparents!

A Joy and a Pleasure

After weeks of waiting for the right moment to read this book, I finally had some time to myself so I picked it up last night and read it cover to cover! I absolutely loved it! I didn't want it to end! Each story is so original and I would have loved to have read even more! Some of them were very touching and some of them made me laugh out loud. The whole time I kept thinking about what an adventure writing this book must have been. It had to have been fun writing it, because it was an absolutely joy to read!!!!

Charming, readable and filled with real people, the book is a cross-section of lives with happy marriages and some not so happy. I still remember, with fondness, where, when & how I met the 2 men I married-though both marriages ended in divorce. I especially loved the chapter titles and the way they captured the theme of these simple stories. Appropriate for all ages, genders and races - I can't think of one woman I know who wouldn't love to spend a little time reliving that "how did you two meet" moment. Susan has taken that age-old question, and spun a delightful series of "vignettes of love" that will make you smile and remember. A unique little gift for Christmas, Valentine's Day, an anniversary or even a wedding.

So Many Ways to Meet Your Lover!

Who would think there are so many ways for couples to meet, fall in love, and end up married! This book dispells the notion that boy-meets-girl is typical. The author has collected an amazing breadth of stories from across the US and around the world. Written by the lovers themselves (or sometimes their children or grandchildren), the stories get more unique with each chapter. Not something you hear in casual conversation. If you are looking for character development or literary creation, this isn't it. But if you want to hear it like it is, direct from the lovers themselves, in very easy to read chapters....you will enjoy this book. I still want to know more about each couple, and how the author met and convinced the lover to tell the story. Maybe a sequel?
