To use a cliche, Undertow is a real page turner. The main character, Dana, and her son, Chris, are both very beleivable characters and I quickly found myself empathizing with them. They are going through a major upheaval in their "white bread" middle class lives, and this book excellently chronicles their mistakes and triumphs as they learn about the other side of life. A life full of danger and violence, but also of friendship and hope. I was surprised to discover that Undertow was Reid's first book. The pace and plot developement of this novel were excellent. There are no slow spots. In fact, I read it in one sitting. Reid displays an excellent word sensibility that makes the characters and their surroundings seem real. I was totally absorbed. I can't wait to buy her second book.
