This book analyzes the determinants of school performance of primary school pupils in Togo in mathematics and reading based on data from the PASEC 2019 survey. By mobilizing a multilevel model that takes into account the hierarchical structure of the education system, the study highlights the simultaneous influence of individual, family and school characteristics on student performance. In particular, the analyses show that pre-school attendance significantly improves performance, while repetition and rural schooling are unfavorable factors. The socio-economic status of households and the experience and qualifications of teachers also play a decisive role. This book analyzes the micro and macro factors of school success and provides empirical results useful to researchers, decision-makers and educational players. It also puts forward recommendations for improving the equity and efficiency of Togo's education system, notably by strengthening pre-school, teacher training and school infrastructure.
