This book analyses the process by which Ganapati evolved into a multifaceted personality acquiring, over the centuries, several distinct roles and attributes. These were largely determined by the changing needs and perceptions of various castes and religious groups in specific geographical areas. This approach allows a better understanding of some aspects of Ga]napati such as his association with the trading community or the reasons why he acquired several sects of his own. Likewise, it helps explain why Ga]napati was viewed differently by the Buddhists, the Saivas?and?the?Smartas.

Against this background it is possible to better appreciate some of the current perceptions of Ga]napati. Of particular interest is the analysis of the deity's role in the contemporary religious life of people in those regions where the Ga]napatya sects once flourished. Based primarily on field work, this analysis shows which of the older traditions and beliefs continue to be relevant and how the needs of modern society have given rise to newer dimensions to Ga]napati's role and the rituals associated with?him.
