They were able to hook you in thru fabrication and occupy your life for this entire duration. They lead you to edge of hope but never deliver. Hope deferred makes the heart sick I heard. When desire is constantly put off, strung along, the personality outcome is not a healthy fashion. When constantly strung along/hope deferred one's intellect/discernment becomes muted/blurred.
