Another man who can write authentically about women
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 20 years ago
It's been a long time since I've read a story that made me laugh so hard. Usually books that focus on women's issues take themselves too seriously. I was moved by the strength of the female characters that weren't merely stereotypes of strong women but women of stregnth who also had fears and insecurities. In short, real female characters. It reminds of Arthur Golden's Memoirs of Geisha where a male author writes so authenically about women.
For women who are living out loud.

This book reaffirms why I like strong and confident women. This book is not for you if you're one of those "husband-catering cooking-baking" type women who's life's goal is to marry up and drive an SUV. All the rest, you're in for a great ride.

This book is a fun ride. It paints a vivid and rich picture of campus life for women athletes. I am invested in the characters' lives, especially Lonnie, thanks to the love the author pours into building their histories and unique flavors for the readers. This book is a tantalizing read and inspirational to young and old, teaching us about going for our individual dreams, while working together for a higher purpose.
personal and global

This book was much more complex and informative than I thought it would be. I expected it to be light reading, but it raises issues that hits the reader on a personal and global level. Personally there are the real issues of how athletic women struggle in the beginning stages of dating because the same attributes that make them successful athletes, independence, confidence and leadership are the same things that sabotages their love lives. Globally, the stories about how women are mistreated in traditions around the world was very compelling. Under the Rim made a strong argument that we all have a responsibility to reach out to those women, in the same way that the world community reached out to the black South Africans and made that country end Apartied. There aren't too many books that can do all that and make you laugh out loud.

I laughed out loud. Covered all the bases: Funny, emotional, informative, thoughtful, and the ending made me want to read the sequel.
