A memoir of Misery and Faith during the fall of Germany

In "Under The Eye of the Shepherd", Werner Klein shares his memories of life as a youth in wartime Germany. His memoir is not only very inspirational, but also a fascinating look at the bleak circumstances that many German families faced during and after the defeat of Nazi Germany. Klein shares his story of seperation from his family and being shipped off to a Russian labor camp. Later he would escape start his long journey home. While much is known about the atrocities committed by the Nazis, most of us have seen or read very little about the punishment the Germans faced at the hands of the conquering Red Army. Much of this book deals with Werner's faith in God and his religion (Mormon) and how they helped him through many tough times. I found this book to be somewhat similar to "Blood and Honor" by Kerstan, which I also highly recommend. At a little over 100 pages this book is perfect for a nice short read if you are interested in WWII biography from a German point of view, or if you like inspirational stories with a religious centered theme.
