Attorney Alfred [Fred] Catalfo Jr. has written his autobiography, Undefeated: Scored On Once. Fred has been a member of the NH bar since 1947 and the TN bar since 2008. He was elected Strafford County Attorney twice and ran for U.S.Senate. He played prominent roles as Chairman of the NH Democratic Party and Chairman of Strafford County Democratic party. He was a delegate to the California convention for JFK. Fred practiced many areas of law but he was known for his expertise in Criminal Law. He attended a swearing in at the New Hampshire Supreme Court. The Cheif Justice Martin Laughlin introduced him to the inductees as ,"A man who has forgotten more criminal law than all of you will ever know." Born to Italian immigrant mill workers , Fred was forced to quit school after eighth grade to help support his family. He had a burning desire to become a lawyer. Under family protest he quit the factory job and started high school at the age of 19, speaking only Italian and some broken English. Within two years he was on the debate team and eventually editor of the school newspaper. Scholarshipped to many colleges he chose the University of Alabama and went there without a scholarship. He played freshman football and was elected freshman class president. In his campaign speeches he said he was from southern Italy, lived in southern NH and went to school in South Berwick, Maine. Unable to afford UA after his freshman year he went back to UNH to obtain a BA. WW11 interrrupted and he joined the Navy. He was in a plane crash that left him on the critical list for 12 days and in an arm and body cast for 9 months. Undeterred, Catalfo finished his BA and finished a three year course at Boston University School of Law in two years and passed the bar in 1947. Many more highs and lows are outlined in this book. Fred has remained fearless, determined and undetered by his critics thoughout his life. In this book he explains how his philosophy has helped him overcome adversity. He currently lives in Gatlinburg, TN . He was admitted to the Tennessee Bar at age 91 upon recomendations of NH judges that he was still practicing in front of weekly. Fred is an active member of the NH bar and the TN bar. He is Judge Advocate of the New Hampshire Disabled American Veterans of which he has been a member since WW11.
