A slave for forty years, Thomas H. Jones published his memoir in order to raise money to purchase his son's freedom. It became a popular abolitionist pamphlet, revised and reprinted six times from 1855 til 1885. This edition is from the 1850s and includes The Surprising Adventures of Wild Tom, a fugitive slave from South Carolina, escaping into the swamps for retribution taken due to his wife's murder by a Mr. Martin. His autobiography, "Experience and Personal Narrative of Uncle Tom Jones; Who Was for Forty Years a Slave", describes the moral journey of a slave who is degraded and mistreated but who nevertheless seeks education while he strives to save his wife and children from slavery.
