UMPIRE'S CALL: DEVILS RISING

by E. Estella
Two men. One Grand Final. And a season that was never supposed to be fair.

Darren Dillon has waited twenty years for his shot at the AFL. Michael Murphy walked in three hours late eating the wrong pie and got in on his first try.

Together they are the most unlikely pairing in Australian officiating - and the most dangerous thing in the room. They just don't know it yet.

Behind them, three men sat down at a table in Salamanca Place. One of them runs AFL goal umpiring. One of them owns forty-one million dollars of debt. The other two are patient in the way of people who have done this before.

Tasmania is entering the AFL. The cameras aren't ready. Every goal, every behind, every touched ruling will be human judgment only.

They have the right people. They have the right season. They just need the calls to go the right way.

Umpire's Call is a novella about what happens when the most principled people in the room are also the most useful ones to corrupt - and what it costs, in the end, to call what you see.

Funny, precise, and genuinely moving. A novella about football that was never really about football at all.
