Umberto was born in Pontecorvo, Italy in 1924. Art and creativity were his passions. At the age of 8 he won his first art award for pastel drawings depicting his life on his family farm. Unfortunately, family responsibilities did not afford him the opportunity to pursue an education with the funds offered as his award. Instead, Umberto's history brings him to a position in the government police force in Rome where exposure to the periphery of WWII came near to costing him his life. He returns to his family to deal with the horror and deep personal cost brought on by the war. Despite a deep psychological and philosophical commitment to his family, a distant uncle facilitated his immigration into the United States where he settled down, married and raised a family. In his eighties Umberto recollected and documented his life in Italian long hand writing. This literal translation of Umberto's writing passionately tells his story, inspires the reader, and demonstrates the power of a strong work ethic, determination, and resiliency during trying times.
