He shows that the pro-Western and pro-Russian camps are often similar: neoliberal, authoritarian, nationalist and heavily dependent on foreign support. A far cry from civilizational or ideological clashes, De Ploeg argues that the current tensions flow from NATO's military dominance and aggressive posture, both globally and within post-soviet space, where Russia seeks to defend the status-quo.

Dutch Journalist Uncovers Much in Report on Ukraine Conflict

This is one of the few early studies of the Ukraine conflict, tracing its beginnings from before the Maidan coup, through the removal of the Yanukovych government, and the contest of oligarchs and nationalists and western nations to gain control, the attacks on Donbas, the Minsk Accords, etc. Very readable, and well sourced, balanced account that today still ranks as some of the best writing on this issue.
