A novelette and a novella under the same cover. At first they might seem unrelated, a random pairing. But on closer consideration, a unifying theme emerges. Solitude, loneliness, and the anxieties that accompany isolation are present in both stories, in which women willingly take themselves to locations that place them apart from the hubbub of ordinary life. In one, the weather is almost another character, in the other a crumbling mansion exudes its own personality.
Two is a pairing that could baffle readers, but the women in both stories, bewildered too at first, find ways to look forward with optimism. Perhaps readers can too.
