Just finished this book. Excellent. Really gives an authentic feel for life in a very special place and a very special time. I know this because I actually live there. Sally Small is 1st class writer. I admire her style.
A Charmer

This book is such a charmer. I really got lost in Sally Small's fictional recollections of her childhood in the culturally diverse Sacramento River Delta after World War Two. While the overall arc of the novel is both compelling and touching, the individual vignettes -- watching the pharmacist work his magic at the ice-cream fountain, listening in on the farmers at Ike's Deli figure out how to help a friend in need -- have truly captured that special kind of folksy Americana spirit that reminds you about the power of community. Loved it.
