Willa:
At the time, I felt invincible. I liked being unattractive; in a sick way, I felt powerful, untouchable, a pure being unable to feel. I felt this because I didn't want to be in the world - I wanted to shrink back to being a little girl again. Once the damage is done, it's very hard to reverse this deeply entrenched belief.
Emma:
Quite apart from setting up a whole new world of everyday worries, being the parent of an anorexic child created a profound and deeply distressing anxiety: Was I a failure as a mother? How on earth did I let this happen under my roof, around my kitchen table? How was it that, for so long, I couldn't see what was staring me right in the face? Was it denial, stupidity, ignorance, or something else? I suspect every mother faced with this predicament suffers in the same way. And I'm equally convinced that, at some point, we all end up blaming ourselves.
