In 2005, the University of the Andes in Santiago, Chile, commissioned Shepley Bulfinch with me as design principal to produce the Schematic Design for their new teaching hospital on the University campus. The University, relying on its reputation, took a gamble in building this facility remote from the city center; however, their gamble paid off, and in 2023, they commissioned Shepley Bulfinch once again to update their master plan and design a multi-use bed tower to accommodate their 10-year growth projections. Even though I retired in 2008, Shepley hired me as a consultant because of the extensive work I had done for the University beginning in 1999 with the design of their central library, followed by the ESE, their school of economics. This book documents the schematic design process of both projects, where the client and architect collaborated on producing a remarkable facility.
