This is a true story of 13 US airmen of two different B24 bomber crews shot down over war torn Yugoslavia in May of 1944. It details their escape, evasion and rescue after 3 months behind enemy lines being protected by Serbia's Chetnik guerrilla forces and countrymen and women. Their everyday struggles, emotional ups and downs are demonstrated in their thoughts and conversations throughout the story. My father, S/Sgt. Floyd Byfield is one of the survivors and is part the greatest air rescue of WW II code named "Operation Halyard". I dedicate this manuscript to my father and the valiant people of Serbia who took great care and protected him from Nazi capture.
