Two Loves drew me in from the first page. Sian James has a facility for creating sharp dialogue that rings true and interesting well-drawn characters. The book centers on a woman who has defined herself in relationship to others--to her deceased husband, her son, and her ex-lovers--and is struggling to create some kind of identity for herself. The character seemed maddeningly out of touch for a woman of 35. The novel explores the interplay of compromise, sacrifice and self-interest in the context of male/female and parent/child relationships. Although the book is engaging and extremely well executed, I found myself curiously unmoved. Perhaps it's because I was annoyed by the main character's obtuseness in making life choices. Then again, maybe the fact that I was annoyed means that I was moved!
