Until we learn how to forgive, we really can't move forward. We will be imprisoned in hatred or self-loathing, we will continue to be angry without knowing why, we will never thrive in our marriage, never discover the abundant life God wants for us. There is no future without forgiveness. The problem is that we are constantly faced with new challenges, new hurts, that force us to yet again make the choice: will we forgive? Forgiveness is a skill, a belief, a way of life that we have to develop because we are constantly faced with new situations that will require it. The need to forgive will always be with us, every day. We need to choose forgiveness every day, but it is not easy or free - forgiveness costs you something every time. You have to be willing to pay the price, and you have to be willing to let something go. That is what the Bible teaches is necessary for forgiveness: 1) a price to be paid; and 2) a release or a letting go. Sometime the price is the letting go, the letting go of our "rights," the letting go of certain satisfactions, of what we want to hold over others, of hatred, of constantly obsessing about what someone else has done to us. Forgiveness is never free, but you'll never be free without forgiveness. Are you ready? We'll cover three areas of forgiveness, and not all of these may be your struggle, but there are core principles in the first section that the other two build on: Section 1 (chapters 1-4): How to forgive God Section 2 (chapters 5-9): How to forgive others Section 3 (chapters 10-12): How to forgive ourselves If you are using this as a guide for a group discussion in a Bible class or small group, there are discussion questions for each chapter at the end of the book.
