Twice Told Tales of a Southern Palazzo

By John Clark McCall Jr.

Book Overview

The Atlanta Paramount Theatre, which opened in 1920, was perhaps the finest example of Palladian architecture ever adapted as a private residence. Its facade, designed by the great classicist, architect William Trammell Shutze found its way to Moultrie, Georgia where an equally talented architect and uncle of the author, William Frank McCall, Jr. FAIA utilized the theatre's imposing front for the private residence of good friend Robert Byrd ("Brother") Wright, Jr. And from this villa in a small Georgia town the tales begin. These are the true accounts of a "complex, twisted and highly fragrant story" about a "singularly distinctive mansion that cements all of the Southern waywardness" as a backdrop. Twice Told Tales... recounts the hilarious and often unbelievable events that have occurred during the tenure of three Southern bachelors within and without its Palladian walls. At the axis of these stories is the author's aunt, Alyce McCall who struggles to keep "her" neighborhood homogenized and free of anything but the norm prescribed by this small town well below the Mason-Dixon line. A "new and improved" version of the author's first edition includes additional photographs, personages and reminisces shaping this memoir into an unforgettable view of Southern life--from triumphs and laughter to bitter disillusionment. It's all real; it can't be fiction!
